A Light to My Path

“A Light to My Path”

Greg King

Dark places are often dangerous places. They can also be scary places in part because of the unknown. There are things we would do, places we would go in the light that would become scary and dangerous in the dark. For that reason we use flashlights when we go out in the dark.

Spiritually, the same thing is true. Spiritual darkness is dangerous. So, God provides us His light to illuminate our path. Proverbs 6:23 says, “For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline are the way of life.” Psalm 19:8 says, “The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.” He goes on to say in Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.”

We need God’s light to illuminate our way through life. Jeramiah states in chapter 10 and verse 23, “I know, O LORD, that a man's way is not in himself, Nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.” The wise man states in Proverbs 14:12, “There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” Without God’s word we are on a collision course with failure. Just look at how our society is diminishing before our very eyes. Darkness prevails. God is not listened to and chaos reigns. The light is present but most choose darkness.

Psalm 119:97-105 is a beautiful tribute to the wonders of the Word of God and the service it provides as a light to our path.  “O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. 98 Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies, For they are ever mine. 99 I have more insight than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. 100 I understand more than the aged, Because I have observed Your precepts. 101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word. 102 I have not turned aside from Your ordinances, For You Yourself have taught me. 103 How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104 From Your precepts I get       understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
