02 Back to the Bible – The Need for the Nation to Go Back to the Bible

Mike Willis

In the years before Judah was defeated and deported from their land into Babylonian captivity (606 BC to 586 BC), Jeremiah repeatedly called on his nation to repent and return to the Lord. Their repentance would require that they reject the false gods and idols of the nations around them and repent of their sinful conduct. In appealing for Judah to repent, Jeremiah wrote,

“But from our youth the shameful thing has devoured all for which our fathers labored, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. Let us lie down in our shame, and let our dishonor cover us. For we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and WE HAVE NOT OBEYED THE VOICE OF THE LORD OUR GOD” (Jer. 3:24-25).

America has deteriorated to the point that our second term Republican president was recently elected based on his MAGA platform: “Make America Great Again.” Enough people were disgusted with the deterioration of conditions in our country to elect a candidate who has offended more people than any presidential candidate in my memory. He spoke  what the common man thought. Think of some of the disastrous things occurring in our land (all statistics are taken from AI research):

  •       The richest nation in the world is more than $36 Trillion dollars in debt!
  •       The nation legalized abortion in the Roe v. Wade legal decision in 1973 and 65 million unborn babies have been aborted since then!
  •       No fault divorce was legalized in 1969 in California and quickly spread throughout the states by the mid-1980s. Recent data indicates that 41% of first marriages, 60% of second marriages, and 73% of third marriages end in divorce!
  •       Divorce hurts children. It causes emotional and psychological effects, affects academic performance and social relationships, has development impacts, and also long-term effects, such as forming their own marriage relationships.
  •       America leaders have lost the ability to define the difference between a man and woman.
  •       Same sex relationships are presented as normal and celebrated with one month (June) of the calendar year dedicated to Gay Pride. The birth of our nation gets only one day a year but 30 days are dedicated to honoring Gay Pride!
  •       70% of adolescent females and 65% of adolescent males have had sex by age 19 and few have married.

We could continue this list considerably. Would to God that our nation would manifest the repentance Jeremiah wished for sixth century BC Judah. But Judah never repented. Consequently, God sent the Babylonian nation to destroy Jerusalem and its Temple. The ancient proverb was manifested by its destruction: “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Prov. 14:34). Is it too late for America to repent or must it go through the same judgments as have destroyed most other world empires?
