Feeling Lonely

Feeling Lonely?

You are not the first to have this feeling. King David pleaded for God’s presence saying, “Turn Yourself to me, and have mercy on me, For I am desolate and afflicted” (Psa. 25:16). The fact is that man without companionship does feel alone. When Adam existed alone in the Garden of Eden, before the creation of Eve, God said, “And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him’” (Gen. 2:18). Comparatively few people try to navigate life without a marriage partner.

Circumstances of life, such as death of a mate or other family members, relocation to a place where one has no friends, isolation by misconduct from others, etc., sometimes leave a person feeling alone. The prophet Elijah complained to God saying, “I alone am left; and they seek to take my life” (1 Kings 19:9).

God provided companionship for man and woman in the family relationship, and this should be the first source of help for loneliness. But, sometimes family relationships are broken by sin or death, leaving one lonely. God also created a spiritual family where brothers and sisters care for one another in the church. Church members should support one another: “And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it” (1 Cor. 12:26). Maybe God has already provided the answer to your feeling loneliness; He has an answer near to you and willing to help. Visit us at the Decatur Township Church of Christ. You will be warmly received.
