Foolish or Wise?

Foolish or Wise?

Greg King

The person who fails to make preparation for eternity is declared by God to be a fool. In Luke 12:16-21 we are told of a farmer who is only concerned for himself and the present. As you read the text notice how many times he said “I”.  He was selfish and self-serving. He “knew” that he had a long time to live.  He saw himself as strong and healthy.  He had never died before.  Death was something for old people & sick people to be concerned with however, God saw things quite differently. God declared the farmer a fool. His life was to end that night, and he was unprepared. He didn’t have any more days to take his ease after which he could give God consideration. This man came to a tragic and foolish end.  He failed to consider the brevity of life and the certainty of death. He died unprepared.

He wasn’t foolish because he was antagonistic to God.  He wasn’t an active atheist.  He was simply unconcerned for the eternal security of his soul. That evening when the vale of death enveloped him, I wonder how his priorities changed?  I wonder if he had any regrets.  I wonder if his interest in spiritual matters changed.

Sadly, we see many following in his steps.  Living for today; only concerned for having a good time and enjoying life. Casting their lot with those who prefer to think about spiritual matters at a more convenient season. We don’t know when death or judgment will come, but we do know that they will come (Heb. 9:27). Will God consider you foolish or wise?
